Introduction
Kozhikode, also known as Calicut, is a city in the southern Indian state of Kerala. It is the third largest city in Kerala and the headquarters of Kozhikode district. Kozhikode was once the capital of an independent kingdom, and later of the erstwhile Malabar District.
Calicut has a very colourful past. Vasco da Gama landed at Calicut (Kappad - 16 KM from the city) in 1498, becoming the first European to reach India by the sea route around the southern cape of Africa.
His arrival heralded the period of Portuguese supremacy in India and the history of Calicut after 1498 was certainly dramatic. The serene beaches historic sites, rivers, hills, lush green countrysides, a unique culture and a warm, friendly ambience make kozhikode a popular destination.
