It is a quiet town where the rustle of wet palm fronds on the backwaters, are often the only indication of signs of life. But come August, there is a sense of urgency, a building up of noise, a roar and then entire villages standing up to shout, egging on the oarsmen as they row gustily on the Vembanad Lake. The Nehru Trophy (India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, inaugurated in 1952.) Snake boat Race in August is repeated during the tourist season, titled Tourism Snake boat Race around mid-January. Alleppey is famous for its boat races, houseboats, coir products, fish and lakes. Alappuzha remains prominent on the tourist attractions of Kerela as one of the major centers for backwater cruises. An enchanting backwater destination, Alleppey offers visitors many other leisure options like - boating and fishing, very popular with the tourists. A picturesque world of backwaters, thatched houseboats, Cormorants, Chinese fishing nets and swaying palms - Alleppey is an ideal getaway.

Among the locally available products of Alleppey are the coir products and carpets. The fine quality, variety and reasonable price tag ensure these products stay high on the demand list of tourists. Alleppey is also famous for its pepper, coconut oil, areca nut, cardamom, sugar, etc and there are several markets where these, as well as colourful piles of fresh fruit and vegetables, can be purchased. On the whole though Alleppey isn’t what you would call a shopper’s paradise, but if you don’t plan on visiting other parts of the country, to go shopping, then you won’t be disappointed as what is available is generally of good quality and you won’t go home empty handed.
