Bilaspur City, the district headquarter of Bilaspur District, is the biggest urban center of the region. Bilaspur is the second largest city of Chhattisgarh state. Situated on the banks of River Arpa, Bilaspur is 114 kms from state's capital towards the north-east. Bilaspur has an history of about 400 odd years. It has been named after a beautiful fisherwoman Bilasa. Besides having places associated with its ancient and cultural heritage, the city is also famous for its wildlife variety. This is because of its situation within the state. It is reputed for having some of the densest forests in the country and an even spread of hills and rivers. Bilaspur district is not only famous in Chhattisgarh but in India due to its unique characteristics like rice quality, Kosa industry and its cultural background. Bilaspur district has a major contribution in the naming "Dhan Ka Katora" for the entire Chhattisgarh region.
