Gaya is a city in Bihar, India, and it is also the headquarters of Gaya District. Located 100 kilometers south of Patna, the ancient town of Gaya is of enormous significance to Hindus and Buddhists as well. Situated at the bank of Phalgu River, it is said that it is here that the Lord Buddha advocated the essence of life and the Lord Vishnu preached the reality of death. Gaya is home to a number of sacred shrines, the Vishnupad Temple being the most notable. To its south is Bodh Gaya, the site of the great enlightenment. The temples found in and around the city host hundreds of thousand of pilgrims annually.
